Mean Streak Contest

There are the few, the proud, the noble hearted within the galaxy. Those that choose the high road, the path less taken; those with a moral obligation to do what is right.

You aren’t one of them; at least not this week …

MEAN STREAK CONTEST

Homogeneous

Well, it’s been a few weeks now since the release of Incarna, and I’ve had some time to cool down and try to look at things objectively, not that I wasn’t before. Let’s begin.

Every MMO I have played has thrived on two things: grinding, and being unique. While ultimately there are never enough player options in any game to be 100% different from any other player in appearance and possession, many MMOs go to great lengths to create a truly unique player experience. In the end, it’s those unique memories that keep us playing a game, and look back at it fondly when our time there is done, or resent the game, rage quit, and trash it across the interwebs. New Friends, Old Enemies

by Jack Carrigan – who now has his own blog!!!!

Freedom. To true Gallenteans, it is the most simple and heavily defended of truths guaranteed to a people. To the Minmatar, it is the most fought for. Freedom takes on many different meanings as you ask different people. Is it the ability to do whatever you want, whenever you want? Is it the ability to fly screaming through the bowels of the vast abyss of space? Or is it simply to be free from oppression? Is it up to the individual to decide, or is freedom a constant?

It has been almost two years since I last called Gallente space home, and honestly, I’d rather live with the Minmatar. They are a hard-working people that will stop at nothing to ensure the freedom of their brethren, be they Brutor, Sebeistor, Krusual, Vherokior, Nefantar, Thukker or Starkmanir. A Minmatar will fight by the side of anyone who proves their honor and treats others with dignity and respect. This brings me to something that happened most recently.

It was another rough day, barely having time to get the morning cigarette in before getting back to the spacelanes, but I had to make due. Recently, it had been brought to my attention, that not only my Corporation, but the entire Alliance needed a serious recruitment drive to garner more numbers, and thus the ability to be more versatile. So I made my way down through the concourse, which was surprisingly empty for the most part. I had made the decision to try to find a quieter station to operate out of just so that I could get more work done with less interruptions. I stopped at the recruitment center, and hooked my NeoCom up to the mainframe, to compile a list of pilots seeking employment, or small corporations seeking to find new homes. It was the usual subjects so to speak. I exhaled a breath of tobacco smoke, and noticed a small, industrial Corporation which operated out of Caldari Space. From what I could determine, they seemed like nice enough people, so I sent their CEO a message to contact myself, or one of our Alliance Diplomats. Having done this, I made my way back to the hangar, and loaded the hold of my Thorax-class cruiser with ammunition, and some equipment that needed to be moved, and set off for the day.

Upon my return a few hours later, I noticed that I had a message from one of our Diplomats. Just then, my NeoCom beeped, and I grumbled as I answered it, walking toward the nearest restaurant that had a bar. I didn’t even notice the small Amarrian child who had been trying to get my attention, completely absorbed with the words the Diplomat had for me. His words were full of hope and promise about the Industrial Corporation which had contacted him, a stark contrast to the bland food, and the very bitter beer. Having paid my bill, I made my way back to my quarters, and took up my usual spot on the couch, where I soon fell asleep.

I woke a few hours later to the sound of my NeoCom beeping. I squinted under the bright light of some news channel replaying a blast tearing through an Outpost in Outlaw Space as I fumbled for my NeoCom, and my cigarettes. First things first, I got the cigarette lit and took a drag before answering. I was met with the soft-spoken CEO of the Industrial Corp which we had become fast friends with. I could tell by the panic and urgency in his voice that something serious had happened. It struck me as odd, as they mentioned no problems other than the typical people looking to make a quick ISK by nicking ore. Yet an Industrialist directly calling a Pirate? This was new to me. Once I got him to calm down and take a deep breath, he explained to me that a one-man Corporation had declared war against his ore-loving collection of pilots. I listened, and shook my head as I pulled up the database information in reference to the Corporation he had mentioned. That’s when it hit me. My Alliance had a run-in with this person before, and his old connections. I told our new friend to stand by, as I went sprinting down the gangway which led to my hangar. The lift carried me to my Enyo-class Assault Frigate, which had just finished being loaded with ammunition. I didn’t even get clearance before I tore out of the station at full afterburn.

Our friends waited patiently, as it was a long haul to the destination. They looked disappointed when only an Enyo-Class Assault Frigate and Orca-class Industrial Support Vessel docked. That is until the Orca’s Ship Maintenance Array opened, and the vessels on board were unloaded into the hangar. I walked up and shook their CEO’s hand, and introduced myself. His mates were shy at first as they saw the Jolly Roger emblazoned on the hull of my Enyo. That is, until they realized I was there to help. I explained to them, that while Piracy was my chosen way of life, Industrialists were not my chosen targets, as I see no sport in shooting at something that can’t shoot back. As our Co-Executor finished unloading his complement of vessels, he explained that an emergency meeting had been arranged, and due to the nature of the Corp which had declared war against them, we would have no problems absorbing the war declaration, but had to run it past our Executor, and the rest of the council.

I explained to them my history, the woe, the losses, and the betrayals. I explained to them that I had lost more than most of them would ever know. I explained the good friends commuted to ash, the ships rended to molten heaps of slag, and finally, the personal toll it had taken on me which created what I am today. But they nodded their understanding, and the quietest industrialist among them smiled, and placed his hand on my shoulder. His words made me smile. He said, “Mr. Carrigan, your losses were not in vain if they made you who you are today. I may be a humble miner, but I am not afraid as long as I have good men flying by my side. Let’s teach this enemy a lesson in blood, so it will not soon be forgotten.” In that moment I knew that I had made the right choice when I sent a message to this Corporation. They understood that Freedom is not a right, but it is something that must be fought for, no matter the cost.

New Eden Times – July Edition

I really do enjoy EON Magazine, make no mistake. The quality of the magazine, the impressive photos and articles; it’s a fantastic read. But when my July issue of The New Eden Times arrived, I have to say I couldn’t wait to open the magazine and read. The cover alone convinced me of a very satisfying issue.

But a picture is worth a thousand words… revenge is a bitch Rixx!

Caprese Arugula Salad

It’s important to treat yourself. No, I don’t mean pizza cones, or bacon turtle burgers; geez you guys jump at the chance to throw away all your hard work.

It’s important to treat yourself AND still make wise eating choices.

Caprese Arugula Salad

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 vine-ripe tomatoes, 1/4-inch thick slices
  • 1 pound fresh mozzarella, 1/4-inch thick slices
  • 20 to 30 leaves (about 1 bunch) fresh basil
  • Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling
  • 150 grams arugula
  • Coarse salt and pepper

METHOD

  1. Stack alternating slices of tomatoes and mozzarella, adding a basil leaf and a pinch of arugula between each, on a bowl or plate.
  2. Drizzle the salad with extra-virgin olive oil and season with salt(I use Mrs. Dash salt free seasoning) and pepper , to taste.

It’s delicious, fun to make, fun to eat, and very filling. Not as healthy as your every day eating, but still pretty damn healthy for an occasional treat.

Perfect and light for the summer months. Enjoy!

Also note you can swap out the mozzarella for tofu slices, if you’re so inclined.

OOC: That is my wife

My wife is an amazing wife. Why you may ask? Well, let me tell you one realization I had today; bright and early this morning in fact, as I listened to my body and instead of going for my daily 5km run, stretched out my sore and aching muscles instead.

My wife is selfless, even at the expense of her lasting happiness.

Oh sure, anyone that knows her knew that already, but this morning it hit me like a wall at 40 mph, that she is simply the most appreciative person for the things she has. She truly is humble and grateful for the numerous blessings in her life.

For example, I’ve been very focused on my health: exercising like a crazy person 3x per day, eating 6x per day, working a full time job, running a fitness bootcamp weekly, yet still making time for games, hobbies, blogging, artwork, music production, etc. My life is all about one person; me.

It makes me sound like a horrible husband really; a self-absorbed bastard. Where does my wondrous wife fit into all of this?

Tragically, on initial self-reflection, it would appear she doesn’t. My heart knows that’s not true. I love her deeply and committedly. Isn’t that enough?

Yes, we share a bed. In fact, I understand now why she is adamant about that. Before I thought her refusal to sleep elsewhere when I’m ill, snoring, tossing, turning and the like was because she’s a big sissy and gets scared easy by the sounds of our house. But it’s not. It’s because she clings and demands, not letting go, to every precious second she can have with me, even if it’s to just stare at me while I lay there sawing logs, recovering from all that was my day.

That is my wife.

I’m exhausted when I come home. We rarely get to eat dinner together anymore. She’s busy with her life. I’m busy with mine. She commented just last weekend how nice it was that we got to enjoy a meal together, and only upon that comment did I realize we hadn’t shared a dinner in over a month.

That is my wife.

We don’t get to talk about our days much. I’m too tired.
We don’t get to spend time with family much. I’m too tired.
No walks, no chats, no cafes, no new adventures. I’m too tired.
Hell with the level of activity going on in my life, I can’t even perform my husbandly duties. I’m too tired. Can’t believe I said that one out loud.

Yet still she loves me without limit.

That is my wife.

In the long run, this can’t be healthy for our marriage. In the long run, I’m failing us. Failing to keep up my end of the agreement. And usually, it’s my wife that has to remind me of this. This time, however, I’m figuring it out for myself, maybe for the first time. She hasn’t said a word. All she’s been is quiet and supportive.

That is my wife.

And I wouldn’t trade her for anything, so I guess it’s time for me to continue to shift priorities, make more time for her, and continue to grow into the man I hope to one day be, because of all she is, and all she deserves from this life.

Thankfully our two year anniversary is this coming weekend, so I’ve been given a perfect opportunity to flex my muscle and do something wonderful for the most wonderful person I know.

That is my wife.

Ironically, this started out as an email to her, to let her know why I appreciate her today (I like to tell her one new thing I appreciate about her each and every day), but as the words formed and continue to fill the digital page, I knew in my heart that the world, or at least the little portion of it that visits my blog, needed to know of the incredible woman I am lucky enough to stand beside and say:

That is my wife.

A little housekeeping

Even immortal life has a way of keeping you occupied constantly. There are just never enough hours in a day to get done everything you want to do. As such, I’m taking these few moments to catch up on a couple of important things:

Caption Contest #3 Results

Only a few entries for the contest this time round, but those that did enter made me laugh. The one that made me laugh the most profoundly was from Max Ursa. See the image below.

As I mentioned, the prize was going to be subjective. Max has won himself 100 million isk, which I will deposit into his account shortly. Congratulations Max, and thanks to everyone that participated.

21 Day Challenge Results

I’d also like to thank everyone that participated in the TRX 21 day challenge. Not everyone used a TRX, but there were a few that would not be swayed from the daunting task of being intensely active for 21 days straight!

A big shout out goes to Harlon Mathuin, who with great dedication, reported his daily activities, his personal triumphs and struggles, and his overall impression of his journey. He had this to say:

Final day, got very hot and humid today so working out was quite a bit more difficult than usual. But I got it done.
21 days in a row, challenge complete.
I think I’ve changed a lot over the last 21 days, mentally and (mostly) physically.. but all for the better. Body wise I’m not quite where I want to be yet… but I’m a fair way towards it so I’m damned if I’m giving up now. Fitness is a way of life/ state of mind right?
Thanks for the challenge Roc, it’s done me a hell of a lot of good.

21 days to change a life. That’s a win in my books. In fact, I’m so impressed with Harlon’s dedication, that I’m buying him a TRX! Email me your mailing address at roc@rocwieler.com please.

Look forward to more interesting and hopefully creative ideas and challenges in the future, only on Roc’s Ramblings.
