Tyrannis: The Contest

THE EXCUSE:

Well, firstly, I need to apologize to my readers, and to CCP, and to myself. I had been working on a very cool promo video for this contest: voice recording, epic score, 3D work and After Effects, except that is where I failed… I’m such a noob at After Effects still.

So, the cool promo didn’t get finished in time.

Here’s the monologue from the video, as well as one screenshot; I know it’s weak, and I will do better next time.

I’ve also posted the recording to EVE Files. Here’s hoping it’s still there when you click THIS LINK.

It was a bold decision by Concord, lifting the centuries old planetary prohibition.

Mega-corporations were quick to seize the opportunity, employing capsuleers to expand and secure their industrial empires.

Other pilots were strictly in it for themselves, stripping entire planets to fuel their alliance war machines.

It was five hundred and fourteen days before the dust finally settled.

Trillions of lives forever changed. Untold stories never heard.

THE CONTEST

Tyrannis is upon us May 18th, 2010.

I am sure many have given thought to how this is going to affect us as pod pilots, but who has given thought to the regular denizens of the galaxy? Has anyone thought about how our immortal dealings are going to further upset the natural order of the universe?

THE TASK

To enter Roc Wieler’s/CCP Tyrannis contest on this blog you will need to write one such story, a tale from the point of view of one those citizens of New Eden whom has become affected by our interaction with planets.

It can be a short story, a novella, whatever you feel like writing.

THE RULES

  1. This contest will run from May 1 – May 18, 2010. All entries must be submitted by 11:59 PM EST May 18th.
  2. To submit your story, email it to me at roc@rocwieler.com with the subject “Tyrannis Contest”, or by clicking my picture in the About Roc section of the right hand column of this blog. Make sure to include your character name and your story title.
  3. Your story will then be posted here, and other users will rate it and comment on it. Any untowards spamming will automatically disqualify  your entry in the interest of keeping the contest legitimate and fair.
  4. On May 21st, 2010, I will announce the winners.

THE PRIZES

  • 1st place – $75 to spend in the EVE Store + 2 billion ISK
  • 2nd place – $50 to spend in the EVE Store + 1 billion ISK
  • three additional prizes of $25 to spend in the EVE Store + 250 million ISK

In an effort to not be outdone by CrazyKinux, I’m also asking for all of my readers to donate ISK to this contest. CK raised a billion ISK; let’s do better. Donate to Roc Wieler ingame.

I’m looking forward to reading every entry, and hope this event goes well. Should it prove a success, look forward to bigger and better endeavours between CCP and myself in the future.

  1. Sent in my story, I was a bit bored and read the post on capsuleer, wrote it on my iPod so it’s a bit crap, plus I’m not very creative. Good luck to teh other entrants.

    😀

      • Yes, you would need to sell the Time Code in EVE. You could prolly get a better package purchase if you announce it as a donation for the contest and others might get excited and bid a higher price on it…. Just a suggestion

    • You do have to include your character name please. I like to credit the author of the story, plus how will I know whom to award prizing to should you win?

  2. I love the EVE universe, but don’t have the money to play the game; can I still submit an entry to the contest even though I can’t win?

  3. Hello, Roc! I’m looking forward to participating in the contest, as the philosophical questions between the interaction of common citizens and immortal capsuleers have been running through my head for a while! What would you say is the recommended word length for the entry?

    • So far the entries have been under 4000 words, but there is no limit.

Keep in mind it is your peers that will be reading and rating your entry, and we all know how our community is for reading long posts.

      TL;DR

      • From my impression, the EVE community has more patience for reading long posts than other gaming communities, but correct me if I’m wrong! Nonetheless, I’ll likely be in the range of 4000 to 10,000 words myself, unless I miraculously find more free time in the coming two weeks, so I’ll not be too much of an eyestrain. 😛

And just to clarify, how does judging work? Are you ranking us, are the ratings and comments of fellow players ranking us, or is it a balance of the two?

Thank you for addressing my questions!

        • I would personally enjoy a 10k word story, so bring it on!

Judging is 100% by the blog user rating system so I hope people rate these fine entries!

In case of ties, it’s based on number of user ratings.

I am reading every entry for my own enjoyment, but that is all.

        • Heh, I hope people don’t get lazy with the longer stories. Mine is just about a quarter of the way to 4,000 words :p. Should be done tomorrow night, but until then good luck to everyone! Lot’s of good stories so far! 🙂

  4. SOunds good. I was not sure about the amount of words so I tried to keep mine short now i know how much i could have used. lol But hey i did try.one thing is what the disease was called. which was Hik-Worm Disease. Also other effts i figured if it does not blow your ship or pod up it blows the implants up.So thats a pain to loose.I would have to say thats going to hurt. If you think your jump clone will save you it won’t till after a few injections. thats why it never goes away. when you get it it will come back.. um maybe depends on what you are doing and who may have it. I hope they can quarentine the people. Oh wow yeah now we will be on worlds too so yeah. should be interesting.

  5. Hi Roc, a few questions about the entries.

What rating material is allowed? I wish to include a dialogue in which a character uses an offensive word in his native language. This native language would be a derivative of one in real life, so the meaning of the word could be easily understood by some people.

Is there a lower cap on the number of votes needed for an entry to qualify? Say comparing an entry that received votes from twenty people to one that received votes from five.

    • There is a large Mature rating self-imposed and stamped on this blog; use whatever language you feel necessary as a writer.

No, there is no minimum number of votes to enter. Every submission is entered. However to win, you’re going to need user votes.

  6. When I click on it I get this message:

Looks like you have a problem here sir/madam. You sure you have the right place? Maybe you got a little lost? Maybe you’re looking for something you’re not supposed to find? Either way, just go search for it, it can’t hurt.

  7. Roc I think this idea is hugely appreciated by the community, and I’d like to say, that A’m also very intrigued by it myself 🙂

  8. wow it appears my story is all over the feed-channel XD
thanks a lot for all your support, it is very welcome.

”write whatever is on your mind, then condense it all, cut the strings, change some letters, make up the names, and you’ve got a helluva novel”

    • You raise a valid point, and future contests may be conducted differently.

My goal here was to do more than simply have blind entries. I like when people work for it.

      • If by “work for it”, do you mean pester as many friends and relatives and corp mates as possible to vote 5? =D

I was thinking of writing something but as I just noticed the contest yesterday I don’t think I’d have much of a chance in 2 days of voting.

        • Actually, I meant “Construct something creatively artistic for others to enjoy as you participate in a community greater than yourself, all while striving to win ISK and gift store certificates while most assuredly winning a greater sense of satisfaction.”

          Or some such.
